Cell numbers beginning with 8

I was quite surprised a few days back when I saw Tata Docomo numbers beginning with 8 and googled it up… I found out that the new 10-digit series starting with 8 would be available on both GSM pre-paid and post-paid networks. The growth of mobile phone market in India has reached such a stage that the department of telecommunications has to start number begins with 8 along with 9. Even RCom has come up with this new mobile number scheme.

The new number schem implemented on 1st July 2009 plans to roll out numbers for 100 millions users. These numbers were first introduced in Delhi-NCR Circle and the government has extended the scheme to other states also. Currently, the DoT is planning to introduce a 11digit scheme too
